By Lino A. Renomeron

The Metrobank and Trust Company Employees Union (MBTCEU) held its national election last June 16, 2011. MBTCEU, a local union of Associated Labor Union (ALU) has a total of 4,984 as of members as of April 17, 2011 with over 429 branches nationwide.

The election was conducted by ALU staff serving as election officers, covering majority of Metrobank branches nationwide. Except for those isolated branches or those that are not accessible by election officers due to proximity reasons, elections were conducted by their respective bank management personnel.

The COMELEC that was mandated to facilitate the election was composed of Atty. August Villanueva as Chairman and Attys. Rosalio Aragon Jr. and Ricardo Lapesura Jr. as members. The canvassing of ballots was conducted by ALU staff. Candidates, along with their watchers were present during the canvassing at the ALU National Office. “The election was relatively smooth and peaceful except with the delay of transmittal of ballots from some isolated branches,” Atty. Villanueva said.

The proclamation of new and duly elected officers was held last June 28, 2011 in the ALU Conference room. Present were Bro. Gerard Seno ALU’s NVP for Membership and Recruitment Services, Sis. Eva Arcos NVP for Education and Information and the COMELEC. Proclaimed President was Sis.Luceria “Lucy” Diego, Senior Executive Vice President Bro. Renato “Rene” Tamondong and Executive Vice President Bro. Jenaro Oscar Campos Velasco.

In an interview, Sis. Lucy Diego, the newly elected President said, “I’m happy that my party line-up won the majority seats.”  Asked what would be her agenda and projects for the MBTCEU for the next five years, she said,  “I want to institutionalize programs for women since 70 percent of MBTCEU members are women.” Committee membership is also her priority so that all board members will be given roles as a way of training new union leaders.

She likewise noted that a new proposed Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) has been already prepared for submission to management.  Among the provisions articulated in the proposed CBA are: increased benefits such as health, quarterly bonus, profit sharing, retirement benefits and job security. “The CBA is already ripe for negotiation next year and we are confident that Metrobank, as it celebrates its 50th anniversary on September next year, will adhere to the provisions of our CBA,” she added.

Pursuant to R.A. 6715 otherwise known as the Herrera-Velasco Law amending the Labor Code of the Philippines, all duly elected officers will serve the union for a term of five (5) years.
